To maximize scientific output on the International Space Station, researchers are increasingly relying on automated hardware to manage complex, time-consuming experiments. The ADvanced Space Experiment Processors (ADSEPs), developed by Redwire, serve as versatile mini-laboratories that allow multiple independent studies to run simultaneously within the orbiting outpost.
Each ADSEP unit houses several cassettes, with the newest iteration, ADSEP-4, supporting four distinct modules and integrated imaging technology. Since their introduction in 2017, these systems have facilitated two dozen investigations, ranging from pharmaceutical development to biological studies.
A primary application for the technology is the growth of high-quality seed crystals in microgravity. Through the Pharmaceutical In-Space Laboratory (PIL-BOX) system, scientists are working to improve the formulation of various therapeutics. Notable projects include collaborations with Aspera Biomedicines, such as the ADSEP-PIL-10 investigation, which aims to develop oral cancer medications by crystallizing specific molecules. Another study, ADSEP-PIL-15, focused on enhancing the stability and production quality of existing cancer treatments.
Beyond pharmacology, the hardware supports diverse fields including materials science and biology. A 2021 study, ADSEP-UMAMI, utilized the platform to observe how bobtail squid interact with microbes in space. The results indicated that these symbiotic relationships can help mitigate stress responses and support developmental processes, offering valuable data for long-term human spaceflight.
By automating these processes, the ADSEP platform allows for a higher volume of research while minimizing the time required by astronauts, ultimately supporting both future space exploration and medical advancements on Earth.
