Isabel Rose, 26, of Hackney, London, has been sentenced to six years in prison by a Hong Kong court. The sentencing follows her conviction in March on charges of blackmail and perverting the course of justice, stemming from a fabricated rape allegation against a British banker.
The case originated from a visit Rose made to Hong Kong in January 2024 to see the man, whom she had previously met in Thailand. Following the alleged incident on February 1, 2024, at the man's apartment, Rose reported him to the police. The man was arrested but subsequently released without charge, leading to the investigation and arrest of Rose.
Prosecutors successfully argued that Rose attempted to extort £100,000 from the man. Evidence presented during the trial included WhatsApp exchanges between the two. While Rose initially messaged the man claiming he had violated her, subsequent messages showed her demanding money, with the man eventually transferring £5,000 before stating he could not afford the £100,000 she requested.
Judge Adriana Tse, who presided over the case, sentenced Rose to five years for blackmail and three years for perverting the course of justice, with one year to be served consecutively. During the sentencing, Judge Tse described the defendant's actions as "cruel and evil," noting that Rose had exploited the man's kindness and romantic interest. Rose maintained her innocence throughout the proceedings.
