Isabel Rose, a 26-year-old from Hackney, London, has been sentenced to six years in prison by a Hong Kong court. The sentencing follows her conviction in March on charges of blackmail and perverting the course of justice, stemming from a fabricated rape allegation against a British banker.
The court proceedings revealed that Rose traveled to Hong Kong in January 2024 to visit the man, whom she had met previously in Thailand. Following an encounter at the man's apartment on February 1, Rose accused him of rape. Prosecutors successfully argued that the accusation was a calculated attempt to extort £100,000 from him.
Evidence presented during the trial included a series of WhatsApp messages. While some messages contained accusations of sexual assault, others showed Rose demanding money from the man. The man, whose identity remains protected, initially transferred £5,000 to cover travel and accommodation costs but stated he could not meet the demand for £100,000.
Following the report to the police on February 3, the man was arrested and subsequently released without charge. Rose was later arrested and charged herself. Throughout the legal proceedings, she maintained her innocence regarding the blackmail and perverting the course of justice charges.
During sentencing, Judge Adriana Tse Ching described the defendant's actions as "cruel and evil," noting that she had exploited the man's "kindness, naivety, friendship and romantic interest." The judge sentenced Rose to five years for blackmail and three years for perverting the course of justice, with one year to be served consecutively, totaling six years.
