Cambodia is increasingly positioning itself as a regional hub for automotive production, characterized by a rising number of vehicle assembly plants, tire factories, and component manufacturing facilities. This industrial growth was underscored on July 26, 2026, during the groundbreaking ceremony for a new KNN Automotive Co., Ltd. assembly plant in Kandal province.
Chea Vuthy, secretary-general of the Cambodian Investment Board, stated that the influx of automotive investment demonstrates international confidence in the nation's political stability and economic climate. According to official data, Cambodia approved 276 investment projects valued at approximately $4.7 billion during the first half of 2026, following a strong performance in 2025 that saw nearly $10 billion in registered investments.
The sector's development is supported by the country's special economic zones, which are credited with diversifying the industrial base. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, reported that as of early July 2026, the country hosted 11 vehicle manufacturing and assembly facilities. These plants possess a combined annual capacity of roughly 37,900 vehicles, with a total of 173,473 units assembled domestically to date for the local market.
Vuthy emphasized that these investments are essential for job creation, the transfer of technology, and integrating Cambodia into global supply chains. Recent activity in the sector also includes the inauguration of a Toyota Tsusho Manufacturing plant, which began assembling the Toyota Hilux Travo earlier this month.
