A delegation from Cambodia’s Ministry of Public Works and Transport recently traveled to Tokyo, Japan, to participate in the 6th Executive Committee meeting of the Asia Wastewater Management Partnership (AWaP). Led by Chao Sopheapibun, Director General of the General Department of Sewage System, the Cambodian team joined representatives from Bangladesh, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam to address regional water management challenges.
Hosted by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the summit focused on evaluating national strategies aimed at curbing pollution and improving water quality. A primary objective for the participating nations is to maximize the treatment and safe reuse of wastewater by 2030, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6.3 regarding clean water and sanitation.
Beyond policy discussions, the event featured a technical workshop where 12 leading Japanese technology and engineering firms showcased modern infrastructure solutions. These presentations provided member countries with insights into innovative operational strategies designed to build more resilient sanitation systems.
For Cambodia, the partnership serves as a platform to bolster domestic capacity in wastewater management, supporting the country’s own sustainable development goals. The AWaP framework continues to facilitate the exchange of technical expertise and collaborative problem-solving to improve environmental security across the Asian region.
