The Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a formal protest this week regarding alleged incursions by Thai armed forces into Cambodian territory. According to the ministry, Thai troops conducted unauthorized land clearing and road construction activities between July 13 and July 19, 2026, in the Oddar Meanchey province.
The reported incidents occurred in two specific areas: between border markers 8 and 9 in the Ta Tum region of Anlong Veng district, and between markers 19 and 20 in the Chob Daem Khnor region of Samraong city. In the latter location, officials also reported the installation of barbed wire.
Cambodian authorities stated that these actions violate the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity as defined by the 1904 French-Siamese Convention and the 1907 treaty. Furthermore, the government asserted that the activities breach the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding on land border demarcation and the December 2025 agreement to de-escalate tensions along the border.
The Cambodian government emphasized that it does not recognize any unilateral territorial claims by Thailand and has demanded an immediate cessation of these activities. Officials stated that such measures are necessary to foster mutual trust and maintain regional stability.
In a separate development, the Cambodian Ministry of National Defense welcomed two new military observers from Laos to the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT). These observers, tasked with monitoring the border situation, are part of an initiative led by the Philippines to ensure compliance with ceasefire agreements and promote transparency between the two neighboring countries.
