The Cambodian Ministry of Environment has launched an investigation into KICYN (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. after receiving public complaints regarding wastewater discharge from the company’s laundry facility into the Bati River. On July 27, a joint team from the General Department of Environmental Protection and the Kandal Provincial Department of Environment visited the factory, situated in Kandal province’s Kandal Steung district, to assess the situation.
During the inspection, officials noted that the water exiting the facility’s treatment outlet produced foam and a foul smell. To determine if the discharge adheres to environmental regulations, the team collected samples at the point of release for further laboratory analysis.
The facility, which utilizes a chemical treatment system involving aeration and substances such as soda ash and NaOH, is equipped with an automatic monitoring system. According to the ministry, the company maintains a valid discharge permit and has completed an Initial Environmental Impact Assessment. Initial on-site testing recorded a pH level of 7.94, which falls within the national regulatory limit of 5.5 to 9.0.
While the company's own monitoring data suggests compliance with standards, the ministry has issued a stern reminder that releasing untreated water into the river is strictly forbidden. Officials confirmed that if subsequent laboratory results reveal pollution levels exceeding legal thresholds, the company will be subject to formal legal action.
