The Cambodian Ministry of Environment has launched an investigation into KICYN (Cambodia) Co., Ltd. after receiving public reports concerning wastewater discharge from the company's industrial laundry facility. On July 27, a joint team from the General Department of Environmental Protection and the Kandal Provincial Department of Environment visited the site in Koh Khnor village, Kandal Steung district, to assess the situation.
During the inspection, officials noted that water exiting the factory's treatment system and flowing toward the Bati River produced an unpleasant smell and contained foam. To determine if the discharge violates environmental standards, inspectors collected water samples at the point of release for further laboratory analysis.
The facility, which utilizes a chemical treatment process involving substances such as PAC, NaOH, PAM, and soda ash, is equipped with an automatic water quality monitoring system. According to the ministry, data from this equipment and a preliminary on-site pH test of 7.94—which falls within the legal range of 5.5 to 9.0—suggested compliance with regulations. The company also maintains a valid wastewater discharge permit and has completed an Initial Environmental Impact Assessment.
Despite these initial findings, the ministry emphasized that the release of untreated wastewater is strictly forbidden. Officials stated that if subsequent laboratory results reveal pollution levels exceeding permitted limits or evidence of environmental harm, the company will be subject to legal action.
