The Cambodian Ministry of Information is seeking support from media organizations and content producers to disseminate educational content focused on HIV prevention and the dangers of drug use. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve public health and social welfare.
In a directive dated July 16, the Ministry highlighted the collaboration between the Ministry of Health, the National AIDS Authority, and the National Authority for Combating Drugs. Together, these agencies have produced two educational videos: "The Mistake of Trust," which addresses HIV, and "The First Gate," which focuses on drug prevention.
The Ministry emphasized that the media plays a vital role in raising public awareness regarding public health and safety. By regularly airing these materials, the government hopes to reach a wide audience and strengthen preventative measures across the country.
This campaign arrives as Cambodia continues to navigate public health challenges. While the nation recently became the first in the Asia-Pacific region to reach the global 95-95-95 HIV targets, new infections persist. Data from June 2025 indicated an estimated 958 new HIV cases for the year, with 84% occurring among high-risk groups, including youth, entertainment workers, and individuals who use drugs. Despite these figures, the number of new infections represents a decline of over 200 cases compared to 2024.
Simultaneously, the government remains active in drug enforcement. Reports from 2025 show that authorities handled 10,743 drug-related cases, resulting in 27,884 arrests and the seizure of nearly 5.9 tons of narcotics. Furthermore, over 16,000 individuals were sent for treatment and rehabilitation, with more than 10,600 successfully reintegrated into their communities.
