While thunderstorms are a standard operational challenge, experts warn that climate change may increase the intensity of these events. Research suggests that as the atmosphere warms, it can hold more moisture, potentially leading to more violent storms. Tim Atkinson, an airline risk consultant, warned that a worst-case scenario could involve multiple London airports being simultaneously impacted by storms, forcing mass diversions and creating critical fuel management issues for aircraft. However, other industry figures, such as Andrew Charlton of Aviation Advocacy, maintain that the industry is well-equipped to manage such risks through established safety protocols and decision-making processes.
Beyond thunderstorms, the aviation sector is grappling with other climate-related threats. Clear-air turbulence, which is difficult for pilots to detect, has seen a significant increase in frequency, with incidents over the North Atlantic rising by 55% since 1979, according to Professor Paul Williams of the University of Reading. Furthermore, rising sea levels pose a long-term infrastructure risk to coastal airports. Research from Newcastle University indicates that 269 airports globally are currently at risk of flooding, with major hubs like Amsterdam Schiphol and London City among those potentially exposed.
To mitigate these challenges, airports are investing in new technologies and infrastructure. Systems that optimize landing spacing based on real-time wind data have already helped reduce delays, while some airports have committed significant capital to flood defense strategies.
