NASA’s Curiosity rover is currently navigating the slopes of Mount Sharp, investigating a geological feature identified by the science team as an “erosional supersurface.” This term refers to areas where regional wind or water activity has removed layers of sediment before subsequent deposits were laid down, creating a distinct break in the geological record.
Over the past week, the rover team executed a series of maneuvers to document this feature. After initially backing away to capture broad Mastcam mosaics, the rover utilized its ChemCam instrument to obtain high-resolution, long-distance imagery. Additionally, the team conducted compositional analysis on nearby rock targets, including “Monte Darwin,” “Patacamaya,” “Tarucachi,” and “Mojoncasa,” using the rover's suite of scientific tools.
The rover has been maneuvering toward the base of this layer, balancing scientific objectives with the practical challenges of navigating sandy and steep Martian terrain. Mission planners have identified a viable path to traverse the feature, with plans to attempt the crossing in the coming week.
