The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is facing its deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, with health authorities reporting more than 6,186 confirmed cases and 3,007 deaths since the epidemic began in May 2026. Driven by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no licensed vaccine or specific treatment, the virus has spread from the mining region of Mongbwalu in Ituri province to surrounding areas and into neighboring Uganda.
While international organizations, including the Africa Centres for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, have supported the government in scaling up laboratory capacity and treatment facilities, experts warn that the response remains insufficient. Challenges such as regional insecurity, high population mobility, and a lack of community trust have hindered containment efforts. Currently, a significant number of cases are being identified outside of official contact tracing lists, suggesting that the virus is circulating in ways that traditional surveillance methods are failing to capture.
Progress has been noted in several areas. Laboratory turnaround times for testing have dropped from over a week to a matter of hours, and treatment center bed occupancy has decreased from over 200% in May to approximately 66% by late August. Additionally, the effective reproduction number of the virus has declined from 4.0 to just over 1.0. Despite these gains, officials emphasize that the next phase of the response must shift focus to the village level.
Proposed strategies for the next phase include integrating humanitarian aid with disease control, engaging local community members—such as commercial motorcycle riders—as partners in surveillance, and accelerating clinical trials for vaccines. Currently, approximately 20,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine are being utilized in clinical trials to evaluate their effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain. Experts stress that maintaining essential health services and school operations, alongside regional cooperation with neighboring countries, remains vital to ending the epidemic.
