Libyan emergency crews are working to control a large fire at the Zawiya oil refinery, located west of Tripoli, after a drone strike hit the facility on Monday evening. This marks the third such attack in two days, according to the National Oil Corporation (NOC).
The NOC reported that a fuel storage tank containing approximately 4.5 million litres was directly struck, leading to a massive fire and the tank's collapse. The corporation warned it may suspend operations if the attacks persist.
Libya's Ambulance and Emergency Service said on Tuesday that no serious injuries resulted from the blaze, with most affected individuals treated for smoke inhalation.
The Zawiya refinery is the largest operational facility in Libya, producing 120,000 barrels per day. The NOC has condemned recent attacks in the area, including two drone strikes on a naphtha reservoir and a water desalination plant, and has called for an investigation into those responsible.
The incident underscores ongoing instability in Libya, which has been divided since the civil war that followed the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Rival factions—one in the east backed by military commander Khalifa Haftar and another in the west led by Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah—continue to compete for control.
