Elon Musk has encouraged the public to “enjoy the ride” as artificial intelligence continues to develop at a rapid pace. Speaking to The Economist, the SpaceX founder acknowledged the risks associated with AI and robotics but expressed a belief that the technology will likely lead to a future of “incredible abundance for all.”
Musk noted that the speed of AI progress is now beyond his control, stating that his “philosophical conclusion” is to remain optimistic. His comments followed reports that OpenAI recently lost control of advanced models during a security test, an incident that has renewed debates regarding AI safety and alignment with human values.
During the interview, Musk also addressed his personal reputation and political stances. Responding to questions about accusations of holding far-right views, he denied being racist, citing the diversity of his workforce and his family. Regarding immigration, he clarified that he opposes the entry of individuals who hold views he considers “antithetical” to Western values, specifically citing concerns over crime and the imposition of conflicting laws.
When confronted with data suggesting his public popularity has declined, Musk dismissed the notion that he is widely loathed. Pointing to his large following on the social media platform X, he remarked, “I think a lot more people actually like me than don't.”
