Located in the constellation Musca, the Dark Doodad Nebula is a prominent interstellar dust cloud visible in the southern sky. The nebula, which spans more than 30 light-years, is situated approximately 700 light-years away and is part of the Musca molecular cloud, a region noted for its potential to form stars.
In telescopic observations, the nebula appears alongside the globular star cluster NGC 4372. While the two objects appear close together from our perspective, they are separated by vast distances. NGC 4372 is located roughly 20,000 light-years away within the Milky Way's halo, positioning it far behind the nebula.
The name "Dark Doodad" was established in 1986 by writer and astro-imager Dennis di Cicco. He coined the term while observing Comet Halley from Australia.
