A powerful explosion at a military facility in Viacha, Bolivia, has resulted in at least two confirmed fatalities, with officials warning that the final death toll may rise significantly. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at approximately 14:30 local time, when pyrotechnic materials stored at an artillery regiment barracks detonated.
Bolivian Defence Minister Ernesto Justiniano reported that at least 81 individuals sustained injuries during the blast. While two deaths have been confirmed, health official Rita Nebraska indicated that local estimates suggest the number of deceased could reach between 10 and 15. Additionally, 14 people remain unaccounted for, including a sergeant and 13 conscripted soldiers aged 18 to 19, according to base commander Colonel Antonio Amaru.
The force of the explosion caused structural damage to dozens of nearby homes. Emergency responders are currently clearing debris, though operations have been complicated by concerns regarding potential secondary explosions. Authorities have advised residents to maintain a distance of at least 150 meters from the site for safety.
President Rodrigo Paz has pledged a "thorough, technical and transparent investigation" into the circumstances surrounding the storage of the materials and the cause of the blast. In response to the tragedy, local officials in Viacha have declared a three-day period of mourning.
