Security forces at Leipzig/Halle Airport in Germany neutralized an explosive device found attached to a drone overnight. The object was identified by an employee in the vicinity of cargo planes operated by Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. A police robot was utilized to secure the area, and authorities subsequently performed a controlled explosion after removing the detonator.
The incident occurred alongside a separate event in which an unidentified object struck a cargo aircraft, which later landed in Hanover with minor damage. Following the discovery, operations on the airport's northern runway were temporarily suspended before resuming early Wednesday morning, while the southern runway remained closed.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the situation as a "new level of threat," characterizing the incident as a professional, hybrid operation rather than the work of amateurs. While no suspects have been formally named, officials have noted the potential involvement of foreign powers. Oleksii Makeiev, Ukraine's Ambassador to Germany, publicly pointed toward Russian involvement, though Moscow has not issued a response.
Leipzig/Halle Airport serves as a critical logistics hub, utilized by DHL, the German military, and NATO allies. This event follows a series of unauthorized drone sightings over sensitive German infrastructure, including energy terminals and military facilities, since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine in 2022.
