John Burford, a former NASA scientist turned investment fraudster, has been ordered to pay £655,951.40 in compensation to his victims. The confiscation order, secured by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), follows Burford's 2025 conviction for defrauding approximately 100 investors of more than £1 million.

Between 2016 and 2021, Burford operated a firm called Financial Trading Strategies, through which he provided unauthorized investment advice and managed funds. Investigations revealed that while he solicited over £1 million from clients, he only traded £760,000 of that capital, the majority of which resulted in losses. Evidence presented in court indicated that Burford, who holds a PhD in physics and previously worked on NASA’s manned Mars exploration team, diverted significant portions of investor funds to purchase a home and support a personal lifestyle.

The FCA noted that Burford consistently deceived his clients regarding the performance of their investments and hid financial losses. With this latest court order, combined with earlier repayments, authorities estimate that roughly 99% of the capital provided by the approximately 70 identified victims will be recovered.

Steve Smart, the FCA's executive director of enforcement and market oversight, stated that the recovery of these assets serves as a warning that “crime doesn't pay.” Burford is currently serving a two-year prison sentence handed down earlier this year.
