A narrative known as the “censorship-industrial complex” (CIC) has transitioned from a niche far-right conspiracy theory into a framework influencing the policies of the second Trump administration. The theory posits that a vast, coordinated network of government agencies, academic institutions, civil society groups, and technology platforms has been working to suppress populist and conservative viewpoints under the guise of fighting disinformation.
An investigation by MIT Technology Review and Type Investigations found that the concept gained significant traction in 2023. The narrative was propelled by a small group of media outlets and organizations, with internet activist Mike Benz identified as a central figure in its promotion. The CIC framework now informs how the current administration approaches operations both domestically and internationally.
