Jaden Caradine’s journey to NASA began long before he arrived at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. A Salt Lake City native who developed an early interest in engineering through building with Legos, Caradine initially chose a different path after high school, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. He spent five years serving as a mechanic, including four years stationed in Japan, an experience he credits with shaping his approach to career planning and long-term decision-making.
During his military service, Caradine utilized the Japanese concept of ikigai—a framework for finding the intersection of personal passion, skill, societal need, and professional viability—to refine his career goals. After discovering the potential of emerging aerospace technologies, he enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to study aerospace engineering. He actively sought out industry knowledge by attending conferences and career fairs before eventually securing a position in NASA’s Pathways internship program.
Currently, Caradine works within the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate at NASA Langley. His contributions include assisting the in-space servicing, assembly, and manufacturing (ISAM) team by curating the "State of Play," a comprehensive document tracking sector developments. He also developed an automated tool designed to streamline the team's news-gathering process, a move praised by his mentor, aerospace engineer Dale Arney, for its efficiency and initiative.
Reflecting on his time at the agency, Caradine noted that he was impressed by the collaborative culture at Langley, which avoids the departmental silos often found in large organizations. As he prepares to return to his studies at Embry-Riddle, Caradine plans to focus on developing high-value analytical skills to support his future career in systems analysis. He encourages others interested in the Pathways program to pursue their goals incrementally, stating, "A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step and can only be taken one step at a time."
