Federal regulators justified the decision based on two primary concerns: the potential for foreign-made robots to gather sensitive data in homes or secure facilities, and the need to protect domestic companies from Chinese market competition. This approach mirrors previous trade interventions involving solar panels and electric vehicles, though it represents an expansion of the current administration's protectionist stance toward the broader AI ecosystem.

Industry reaction to the ruling is divided. Gavin Kenneally, CEO of Ghost Robotics, expressed support for the measure, noting that it could foster improved cybersecurity standards and a more equitable competitive landscape. However, critics within the research community warn that the ban may inadvertently hinder progress. Aaron Prather of the Association for Advancing Automation noted that U.S. academic labs rely heavily on affordable Chinese hardware, citing internal data showing that 90% of recent U.S. robotics research papers utilized robots from the Chinese firm Unitree.

While a quadruped robot from Unitree may cost approximately $4,600, comparable domestic models can reach prices as high as $278,000. Despite the practical challenges, the FTC’s order underscores a growing consensus within the administration that humanoid robotics is a strategic frontier.
