Russian commercial vehicle manufacturer GAZ Group is advancing its plans to establish a production and assembly facility in Phnom Penh, according to a meeting held at City Hall on Tuesday.
The discussions took place between Phnom Penh Deputy Governor Imran Hassan and a GAZ Group delegation led by Managing Director Dolgov Leonid. This marks the company's second visit to Cambodia, following initial talks during Prime Minister Hun Manet's official trip to Russia.
Leonid presented the company's portfolio, which includes a 91-year history and 15 manufacturing plants, as well as a recent expansion into Vietnam. The proposed Cambodian operations would focus on producing commercial trucks, buses, specialized water tankers, and emergency vehicles, powered by gasoline, diesel, gas, or electric engines.
The company said it has already held preliminary discussions with the Cambodian Prime Minister and is actively seeking a strategic site within Phnom Penh to expedite operations. Officials cited strong domestic demand as a key reason for entering the Cambodian market.
“We have studied the Cambodian market and identified significant demand for our products,” Leonid said. “We are eager to establish operations here as soon as possible.”
GAZ Group also showcased two vehicle models to city officials and offered to donate one unit to the Phnom Penh municipal administration. The company has requested assistance in expediting import and customs procedures for the donation.
Deputy Governor Imran Hassan expressed the municipality's full support for the investment, promising to facilitate legal and administrative processes. “On behalf of the Phnom Penh administration, we strongly endorse this investment and will work diligently to provide all necessary legal coordination,” he said.
