A geothermal power plant in New Mexico, once on the brink of closure, has returned to full operational capacity following a strategic intervention by the startup Zanskar. The Lightning Dock facility, which first began operations in 2013, had faced a rapid decline in performance as the temperature of its underground water source plummeted significantly faster than typical industry rates.
When Zanskar acquired the site in June 2024, the water entering the plant was measured at 250 °F, well below the 310 °F threshold required for efficient electricity generation. According to Joel Edwards, Zanskar’s cofounder and CTO, previous production wells were limited to a shallow depth of 2,500 feet and failed to tap into the reservoir's full potential.
Using modern drilling technology and advanced underground modeling, the company identified a more promising location and drilled a new well reaching 8,000 feet. Since coming online in May 2025, the well has maintained a flow rate exceeding 4,000 gallons per minute. Over the past year, the 15-megawatt plant—which serves approximately 11,000 homes—has generated more than double the electricity it produced under its previous configuration.
The success at Lightning Dock challenges the conventional geothermal assumption that drilling deeper necessarily restricts water flow due to denser rock formations. Ben Brenner, Zanskar’s director of federal affairs, noted that the increased flow observed at the site could fundamentally shift the industry's perspective on the potential of existing hydrothermal assets across the United States. Zanskar intends to continue developing the site, with plans for further upgrades to increase output.
