Sulemana Abdul Samed, widely recognized as Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the age of 33. Known affectionately by the nickname "Awuche," which translates to "Let's Go" in Hausa, he passed away on Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for infected sores on his legs.
Awuche, who hailed from the village of Gambaga, had been living with Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissues that led to his extreme height. When measured in late 2022, he stood at 7ft 4in (223cm), though it is believed he continued to grow afterward. The condition had significantly impacted his life, forcing him to abandon his aspirations of becoming a driver and limiting his physical mobility.
His medical care had recently been supported by businessman Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of former President John Mahama, who stepped in to cover the costs of his treatment. Despite initial reports that he was responding well to medical intervention, his condition deteriorated suddenly.
Relatives and community members have expressed deep sorrow over his passing. A relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus, described him as a "generous and kind" individual who brought a sense of identity to his home village. Due to the high level of public interest and the expected influx of mourners, the family has opted to hold his burial in Tamale rather than in Gambaga.
