Sulemana Abdul Samed, widely recognized as Ghana's tallest man, has died at the age of 33. Known affectionately by the nickname "Awuche," which translates to "Let's Go" in Hausa, he passed away on Monday at a hospital in Tamale, where he was receiving treatment for infected sores on his legs.
Awuche, who hailed from the village of Gambaga, had been living with Marfan syndrome, a genetic condition affecting connective tissues that led to his extraordinary height. When measured in late 2022, he stood at 7ft 4in (223cm), though it is believed he continued to grow afterward. The condition, which was diagnosed in his 20s, significantly impacted his life, forcing him to abandon his aspirations of becoming a driver and limiting his physical mobility.
Despite his health challenges, Awuche was a well-known figure who brought recognition to his home village. "It gave the community identity, and he was popular as well," said his relative, Sulemana Abdul Kudus. He was remembered by family for his generous spirit and kind demeanor, which drew many to his home following the news of his passing.
In his final days, Awuche received financial support for his medical care from businessman Ibrahim Mahama, the brother of former President John Mahama. Although doctors initially indicated he was responding to treatment, his condition worsened unexpectedly. His family has announced that he will be buried in Tamale to manage the large number of mourners expected to pay their respects.
