Google has initiated a significant restructuring of its artificial intelligence operations, responding to recent financial challenges, talent retention issues, and delays in the development of its next-generation AI models. Leadership at DeepMind is undergoing a transition as CEO Demis Hassabis moves into a broader role as the unit's chairman and Alphabet's chief scientist. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the chief technology officer, will assume the role of senior vice-president to lead the lab's day-to-day operations. Reports indicate that Google intends to exert tighter control over the research unit, which it acquired over a decade ago.
Simultaneously, long-time chief scientist Jeff Dean is departing Google after 27 years. Dean is launching a new startup, Discovery Loop, which aims to automate scientific research. Google is participating as an early investor in the new venture. The organizational changes follow a quarter in which Google's AI division recorded negative cash flow for the first time.
