Ike Theriot, a key figure in the Exploration Extravehicular Activity Operations Branch at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, is currently transitioning from his role as the Flight Operations Surface Testing lead to focus on mission execution and astronaut training for upcoming lunar landings. His work centers on ensuring that flight teams possess the necessary data and operational experience to support humans living and working on the Moon.
Theriot’s contributions include the development of the Lunar Grid Reference System, which is now integrated into flight control protocols. He frequently conducts simulated moonwalks in facilities such as the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory and the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility. His responsibilities have involved testing various spacesuit designs, including the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU), and utilizing the Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS) to replicate lunar gravity for geologic sampling practice.
Beyond facility-based testing, Theriot has participated in field campaigns in remote locations like Labrador, Canada, where he trained with the Artemis II crew in environments geologically similar to the lunar surface. In addition to his surface operations work, Theriot serves as a certified flight controller for the International Space Station and is training to become a capsule communicator (capcom), acting as a primary link between Mission Control and orbiting astronauts.
Theriot’s path to NASA began during his service in the U.S. Army, where he developed an interest in space systems while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. After earning a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Houston and completing an internship, he joined the agency full-time in 2019. Reflecting on his career, Theriot emphasizes the importance of mentorship, noting that his greatest professional satisfaction comes from training others to lead complex operations. "The hardest parts of our job is creating the environment to allow technical work to flourish," Theriot stated regarding his leadership philosophy.
