Ike Theriot, the Flight Operations Surface Testing lead at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, is playing a pivotal role in readying astronauts for the Artemis program. His work focuses on bridging the gap between technical mission requirements and the practical training needed for humans to live and work on the Moon.

Theriot’s responsibilities include developing and executing simulated moonwalks across various U.S. and international locations. He utilizes specialized facilities such as the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory—a 40-foot-deep pool designed to mimic microgravity—and the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility. His contributions also include helping to create the Lunar Grid Reference System, which is now integrated into flight control systems to assist with human lunar operations.

Throughout his tenure, Theriot has been involved in testing both NASA’s government reference exploration spacesuit and the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU). Using the Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS), he has practiced geologic sampling and evaluated lighting configurations to ensure astronaut safety and task efficiency. Beyond his testing duties, Theriot serves as a certified flight controller for International Space Station spacewalks and is currently training to become a capsule communicator (capcom).

Theriot’s path to NASA began during his service in the U.S. Army, where he developed an interest in space systems while deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan. After earning a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Houston, he joined NASA as an intern in 2016 and transitioned to a full-time role in 2019.

A core component of Theriot’s work is mentorship and team development. He has established training exercises, such as the Field Navigation Exercise in Houston, to build the skills of the next generation of surface operations experts. Reflecting on his leadership philosophy, Theriot noted, "The hardest parts of our job is creating the environment to allow technical work to flourish."
