Throughout 2026, the International Space Station (ISS) has served as a hub for scientific research aimed at supporting future missions to the Moon and Mars. The work builds on the success of NASA's Artemis II mission in April, which marked the first crewed flight around the Moon in over five decades.
Astronauts aboard the station are testing technologies and studying the effects of long-duration spaceflight on the human body. These efforts are part of a broader strategy that includes the Artemis program and Moon Base initiatives, all designed to enable sustained human exploration beyond low Earth orbit.
One area of focus is exercise equipment, as astronauts typically lose between 1% and 1.5% of bone density per month in microgravity. The European Enhanced Exploration Exercise Device (E4D) is being tested to support various exercises and simulate different gravity levels, potentially leading to more compact fitness systems for exploration crews.
Medical readiness is another priority. The Intravenous Fluid Generation – Mini (IVGEN Mini) investigation evaluates the production of IV fluids using the station's potable water, which could address the limited shelf life of commercial IV fluids and reduce the need for resupply missions. Additionally, the TUSK experiment studies how microgravity affects delicate robotic operations, aiming to improve automated systems that can perform tasks independently.
Research on the human body includes the Spaceflight Thrombosis and Risk Factors (Venous Haemostasis) experiment, which examines blood flow changes to identify risks for blood clots. The CARDIOBREATH study uses the Bio-Monitor 'smart shirt' to track cardiovascular and respiratory responses during exercise, while the RelaxPro experiment evaluates meditation and other practices to support mental health during prolonged missions.
Spacecraft systems are also being refined. The Lumina investigation tests real-time radiation monitoring using optical fibers, and the ZBOT-NC experiment studies cryogenic fuel storage to improve efficiency. The GEARS investigation surveys the station for antibiotic-resistant organisms to enhance microbial monitoring and diagnostic capabilities.
Research aboard the ISS is expected to continue through the remainder of 2026, contributing to the knowledge needed for future deep space exploration.
