The Kampong Cham Provincial Court has handed down a life sentence to Soben Minea, born in 2005, following his conviction for the murders of nine family members. The ruling, announced on July 30, 2026, marks the maximum penalty under the law for the crimes of murder and premeditated murder.
The incident occurred on November 23, 2025, in Tuol Sambuor village, located in the Stueng Trang district of Kampong Cham province. According to court findings, Minea decapitated one relative before igniting a fire at the family home, which resulted in the deaths of eight other individuals who were asleep inside at the time.
During legal proceedings, Minea admitted to the killings, citing deep-seated resentment stemming from ongoing domestic conflicts with his wife. His victims included his wife, his mother-in-law, his brother-in-law, and several young relatives.
In addition to the prison term, the court mandated that Minea pay $20,000 in moral damages to the civil plaintiffs, though it remains uncertain whether he possesses the financial resources to fulfill this order.
