Sengphachanh Sonethavixay, a policy expert and researcher from Laos, is urging for increased support and empowerment for women working within the agricultural and scientific sectors. Emphasizing that women are integral to the entire agricultural value chain—from production to market access—Sonethavixay noted that they are increasingly adopting modern tools, such as drone technology, to perform their duties.
According to Sonethavixay, fostering collaboration and mentorship is vital for progress across the ASEAN region and beyond. She stressed the importance of creating platforms where female farmers can engage in policy dialogues to share the specific challenges and opportunities they encounter. By bringing women together to discuss their experiences, from daily life to professional scientific roles, she believes a stronger support network can be established.
Sonethavixay pointed out that while the stages of development may vary between nations, women often face similar obstacles in their families and workplaces. She advocates for a collective effort, involving both men and women, to drive empowerment. Reflecting on a recent conference featuring over 150 women scientists, she described the exchange of experiences as a powerful step toward regional collaboration, particularly in advancing science and technology initiatives between ASEAN members and India.
