In early August 2026, a massive tabular iceberg calved from the Petermann Glacier in northwest Greenland. Identified by doctoral student Adam Garbo using European Space Agency satellite data, the event occurred on August 4. The resulting "ice island" measured approximately 76 square kilometers, making it the largest calving event for the glacier since 2012.
Researchers had been monitoring the glacier’s ice tongue for signs of instability, specifically tracking large rifts. While the team anticipated a major break, the actual calving followed a different fracture than expected, resulting in a smaller ice mass than initial projections suggested. Two additional large rifts remain on the glacier, with scientists anticipating further calving events in the future.
Following its departure, the iceberg drifted through the Petermann Fjord at an average speed of 3 kilometers per day. Satellite imagery from NASA-USGS Landsat 9 captured the berg as it collided with Joe Island, a rocky outcrop at the mouth of the fjord. Despite the collision, the iceberg remained intact. Glaciologist Mauri Pelto noted that Petermann icebergs are generally thinner and more fragile than those from other major glaciers, with this specific piece estimated at less than 150 meters thick.
The iceberg has since pivoted away from the island and is moving southwest through the Nares Strait. As it continues its journey, environmental factors such as wind, ocean currents, and melting are expected to cause the ice to fracture into smaller segments. Such ice islands are monitored by scientists due to their potential impact on marine navigation and their role in distributing freshwater as they melt.
