Castle Valley, a region in central Utah historically defined by coal mining on the Wasatch Plateau, has transitioned toward renewable energy with the activation of the Green River Energy Center. Located approximately 130 miles southeast of Salt Lake City, the facility began operations in June 2026.
The project spans several square miles and utilizes nearly one million solar panels alongside roughly 500 battery units. With a capacity of 400 megawatts for both solar generation and battery storage, the site is designed to provide electricity to Salt Lake City and surrounding areas. Developers estimate the facility can power more than 100,000 homes, with the integrated battery system allowing for energy distribution even during non-daylight hours. The plant leverages existing transmission infrastructure previously used for coal-fired power generation.
This development aligns with broader trends in Utah’s energy sector. While coal remains a significant part of the state's history, its contribution to electricity generation dropped from approximately 75 percent in 2015 to about 50 percent by 2025. During that same decade, solar energy production grew from near zero to roughly 14 percent of the state's total generation. Satellite imagery and data continue to play a role in helping officials monitor these shifts in energy infrastructure.
