Emergency services in Spain and France are battling a series of catastrophic wildfires that have forced the evacuation of more than 140,000 residents and tourists. The blazes, exacerbated by prolonged drought and high temperatures, have overwhelmed local firefighting capacities, prompting both nations to mobilize military support.

In Spain, the situation near Madrid has been labeled the "worst fire in the history of the region" by regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso. Three fires merged west of the capital, creating a massive front that emergency management chief Carlos Novillo described as "beyond the capacity of firefighters to contain." Defensive strategies are currently being prioritized over direct suppression as the flames threaten municipalities such as Robledo de Chavela and Fresnedillas de la Oliva. Approximately 6,000 hectares have burned in the Madrid region, while a separate, significant blaze in Ávila has consumed nearly 9,000 hectares.

Across the border in France, the Gironde and Landes regions are facing what officials have termed an "XXL fire." More than 110,000 people have been evacuated, including the entire population of the Cap Ferret peninsula. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez reported that the fire is "self-sustaining" and moving toward Bordeaux, noting that approximately 50 firefighters have sustained injuries. President Emmanuel Macron has mobilized the military and requested international assistance through the European Union’s civil protection mechanism.

The European Union has responded by deploying aircraft and helicopters to assist both countries. Experts from the Copernicus Climate Change Service note that Europe is warming at twice the global average, creating conditions where dry vegetation acts as fuel for rapidly spreading fires. As authorities continue to monitor the situation, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is scheduled to visit the Spanish emergency coordination center, while French officials warn that the fires remain unpredictable due to shifting winds and extreme weather patterns.
