Amazon Prime has announced an October 7th release date for Carrie, the latest Stephen King adaptation directed by Mike Flanagan. The project, which marks Flanagan’s fourth foray into King’s bibliography, debuted its first trailer during the 2026 Comic-Con.
While the trailer maintains the familiar beats of the iconic story, the production aims to ground the horror in the realities of the modern era. According to reports from Deadline, the script integrates contemporary adolescent challenges, specifically focusing on the impact of social media-driven bullying and the prevalence of active shooter drills.
To ensure authenticity, Flanagan consulted with high school students during the writing process. The director noted that these sessions revealed how the internet amplifies cruelty and microaggressions, stating, “They shared shocking one-off situations or constant treatment and microaggressions and things that are not necessarily present themselves as targeted harassment. [We will dive into] the cruelty in today’s world and how the internet has encouraged cruelty, rewards and celebrates and amplifies it.”
The production features Summer H. Howell in the title role. The film serves as a new interpretation of the source material, following the legacy of Brian De Palma’s 1976 version.
