Milo Yiannopoulos, a 41-year-old British political commentator and former Breitbart News editor, was deported to the United Kingdom on Friday. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Yiannopoulos was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after arriving at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport on August 27.
The DHS stated that Yiannopoulos entered the United States in May 2019 and subsequently violated federal law by overstaying his authorized period of stay. Officials described him as an "illegal alien" who has been returned to his home country. Far-right commentator Laura Loomer claimed responsibility for alerting authorities to his status, stating on social media that he has been permanently barred from re-entering the United States.
Yiannopoulos, who previously served as a political aide to Kanye West and worked for former Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, has frequently advocated for aggressive immigration enforcement. In recent years, he publicly called for the mass deportation of undocumented individuals and expressed support for granting legal immunity to ICE agents. Despite his advocacy for strict border policies, his own residency status became a focal point of public scrutiny.
Throughout his career, Yiannopoulos has been a polarizing figure, known for controversial rhetoric regarding transgender rights, feminism, and various social movements. He gained prominence as an early supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 election cycle, though he has since criticized the former president. His career faced significant setbacks in 2017 when he resigned from Breitbart News following the emergence of footage in which he appeared to condone pedophilia—an allegation he denied, characterizing his remarks as a discussion of his own childhood experiences.
