NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program has selected 18 projects to receive Phase I funding, totaling $3.2 million. Each recipient will receive up to $175,000 to conduct a nine-month initial study on their proposed technology. These awards are intended to foster early-stage, breakthrough ideas rather than serve as official NASA missions.
The selected concepts cover a broad spectrum of aerospace challenges. Several projects aim to support lunar infrastructure and exploration, including systems for navigating underground lava tubes, managing thermal control for mobile robots, and utilizing radioisotopic heat to keep astronauts warm during long lunar nights. Other initiatives target deep-space exploration, such as hardening instruments for the harsh environment of Venus, mapping planetary rings with satellite swarms, and developing technologies to observe black hole photon rings or detect gravitational waves.
Additional research will explore interstellar travel, exoplanet imaging, and Earth-focused applications, such as monitoring orbital debris and using spaceborne dust to mitigate solar radiation. Greg Stover, director of the Advanced Research and Technology division at NASA Headquarters, emphasized that achieving the agency's long-term goals for the Moon, Mars, and beyond requires significant technological leaps rather than incremental progress.
The NIAC program acts as an incubator for these concepts, allowing researchers—known as NIAC Fellows—to assess the feasibility and transformative potential of their ideas. Acting program executive Phillip Williams noted that the program is designed to nurture these early concepts to determine their potential benefit to future missions and the national aerospace economy.
