NASA is expanding its cislunar infrastructure development with the upcoming CAPSTONE 02 mission, scheduled for launch in 2027. The project, which utilizes a contract with Advanced Space, aims to refine the technologies necessary for long-term lunar exploration and the agency's Artemis program.
The mission will deploy two 400-kilogram spacecraft, manufactured by Terran Orbital Systems, Inc., to conduct complex operations in lunar orbit. By testing rendezvous, proximity maneuvers, and formation flying, NASA intends to gather critical data on how spacecraft behave under the combined gravitational influence of the Earth and the Moon. These demonstrations are designed to support future crewed missions, specifically by validating the navigation techniques required for astronauts to safely transfer between spacecraft and lunar landers.
CAPSTONE 02 builds upon the foundation established by the original CAPSTONE mission, which was the first to operate in a near rectilinear halo orbit. The new mission will serve as an operational testbed for three NASA-developed navigation software suites and an optical imaging payload from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The spacecraft are designed to alternate between "chaser" and "target" roles, allowing operators to simulate various scenarios that cannot be fully replicated on Earth.
"This mission represents an important step in the maturation of cislunar capabilities," said Sean Fuller, Moon Base CAPSTONE manager. The initiative seeks to automate routine navigation, decrease dependence on ground-based tracking, and establish a scalable model for future deep space missions.
