NASA astronaut Chris Williams is set to return home after completing his inaugural eight-month mission aboard the International Space Station. During his time in orbit, Williams engaged in a diverse array of scientific experiments and operational tasks designed to benefit life on Earth and support future deep-space exploration, including upcoming missions to the Moon and Mars.

A significant portion of Williams' work involved medical and pharmaceutical research. He collaborated with ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot on DNA-inspired materials intended to improve targeted cancer therapies, and he conducted studies on protein crystal growth to aid in the development of new oral medications. Additionally, he managed biological samples using the station's ultra-cold storage facilities to help scientists better understand the physiological impacts of long-duration spaceflight.

Technological and industrial advancements were also central to the mission. Williams conducted experiments to grow semiconductor crystals in microgravity, which could enhance the performance of electronics and artificial intelligence. He also tested ultraviolet light technology to prevent the formation of biofilms, a method that could improve sanitation and reduce reliance on chemical disinfectants in space. Furthermore, he worked with small robotic arms to refine the precision of automated systems for future use.

Outside the station, Williams performed two spacewalks. In March, he prepared the facility for the installation of new solar arrays, which are expected to boost the station's power generation by approximately 30%. In June, he conducted repairs on the Canadarm2 robotic arm. Williams also assisted in the arrival of a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo spacecraft, which delivered over 11,000 pounds of essential supplies and research equipment.
