NASA astronaut Chris Williams is set to depart the International Space Station (ISS) after completing his first mission, which spanned eight months in orbit. During his time aboard the laboratory, Williams participated in a diverse array of scientific experiments and operational tasks aimed at both improving life on Earth and supporting future deep-space exploration to the Moon and Mars.
A significant portion of Williams’ work involved medical and pharmaceutical research. He collaborated with ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot on DNA-inspired materials designed to improve targeted cancer therapies. Additionally, he conducted experiments involving protein crystal growth in microgravity to assist in the development of new oral cancer treatments. To support long-term human health studies, Williams managed the storage of biological samples in ultra-cold freezers, which will be analyzed by researchers upon their return to Earth.
Technological and industrial advancements were also central to the mission. Williams conducted research on semiconductor crystal growth, which could enhance the performance of high-end electronics and artificial intelligence. He also tested ultraviolet light technology intended to prevent the formation of biofilms, a method that could improve sanitation and reduce reliance on chemical disinfectants in space. Furthermore, he operated small robotic arms to refine the precision of automated systems for future space missions.
Outside the station, Williams performed two spacewalks. In March, he conducted preparations for the installation of new solar arrays, which are expected to boost the station's power generation by approximately 30%. In June, he performed maintenance on the Canadarm2 robotic arm. Inside the station, he assisted in the capture of a Northrop Grumman Cygnus cargo spacecraft, which delivered 11,000 pounds of essential supplies and research equipment.
