NASA has officially handed over the NavCube3-mini to Intuitive Machines, a key step in equipping the company’s Altus-1 satellite with advanced navigation capabilities. The delivery, which took place on July 13, supports the creation of a relay network intended to provide essential communication and positioning services for future lunar missions, including the Artemis landings scheduled for 2028.
The NavCube3-mini is a compact device weighing 3.5 pounds and occupying roughly half the volume of a shoebox. Despite its small size, the unit is capable of processing signals from Earth-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS and Galileo, even at lunar distances. The payload requires less than 20 watts of power to function, allowing spacecraft to determine their precise location far beyond Earth's orbit.
Engineers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland developed the technology and subjected it to a rigorous testing regimen prior to delivery. This process included vibration testing to mimic launch stresses, thermal vacuum testing to ensure functionality in space environments, and electromagnetic compatibility assessments. Performance was verified using simulations of the GNSS signals the device will encounter once in orbit.
As part of the Near Space Network Services contract, the Altus-1 satellite will serve as a demonstration platform for this navigation technology. By facilitating reliable connectivity and positioning, particularly in challenging areas like the lunar South Pole, the relay network is intended to support NASA’s goal of establishing a sustained human presence on the Moon. The data gathered from this mission will inform the design of future infrastructure for lunar orbiters, landers, and rovers.
