NASA has successfully delivered the NavCube3-mini to Intuitive Machines, a critical component set to be integrated into the Altus-1 lunar relay satellite. This delivery, which took place on July 13, represents a significant step in establishing the communications and navigation infrastructure required for sustained lunar operations, including the upcoming Artemis missions to the lunar South Pole.
The NavCube3-mini is a compact navigation receiver, weighing 3.5 pounds and measuring approximately half the size of a shoebox. Despite its small footprint, the device is engineered to utilize signals from Earth-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as GPS and Galileo, to determine precise spacecraft positioning at lunar distances. The technology operates on less than 20 watts of power and was developed at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.
To ensure the payload could withstand the rigors of space, it underwent a rigorous testing regimen at Goddard. This included vibration testing to mimic launch conditions, thermal vacuum testing to simulate the extreme environment of space, and electromagnetic compatibility assessments. Performance was verified through high-fidelity signal simulations both before and after these environmental tests.
As part of Intuitive Machines' Altus-1 mission, the NavCube3-mini will serve as a technology demonstration. It aims to validate GNSS-based navigation in the lunar region, providing essential data for future infrastructure. This effort aligns with NASA’s broader strategy to collaborate with commercial partners to create a robust, connected lunar ecosystem capable of supporting orbiters, landers, rovers, and future astronauts.
