NASA’s Earth Observatory has issued its September 2026 satellite image challenge, tasking participants with identifying a mystery location captured by orbital sensors. The agency is encouraging observers to analyze the provided image and submit their findings through an official online form.
While participants are welcome to simply guess the location, NASA suggests that detailed responses—such as identifying the specific satellite, instrument, or spectral bands used—may be highlighted. The agency also welcomes personal insights regarding the geology, history, or personal significance of the featured site.
There is no monetary prize for the challenge; however, the agency offers "puzzler bragging rights" to those who correctly identify the site. The first person to provide the correct answer will be recognized, and selected thoughtful submissions may be featured on the website. The official answer and a comprehensive explanation of the image are scheduled to be published approximately one week after the challenge begins.
