Between June 11 and July 19, NASA hosted an interactive exhibit in East Downtown Houston as part of the FIFA Fan Festival. The installation attracted more than 500,000 visitors, offering a look at the agency's current research, the Artemis program, and the future of human spaceflight.
The exhibit featured a variety of hands-on displays, including a lunar rover simulator, models of the International Space Station, an Orion spacecraft exhibit, and a space-flown soccer ball. Attendees were also able to view astromaterials, Hubble Space Telescope imagery, and a Moon Base display designed to illustrate how astronauts might live and work during future lunar missions.
The collaboration extended beyond the physical exhibit. Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman and Pilot Victor Glover served as stadium captains for a match at NRG Stadium, while Expedition 74 crew members provided video greetings throughout the tournament. Additionally, NASA and Adidas produced a STEMonstration filmed on the space station to explain the physics shared by both space travel and soccer.
The festival concluded with a closing ceremony featuring astronaut Mark Vande Hei, who discussed the parallels between the focus required for spacewalks and professional soccer. Jessica Cordero, Johnson community engagement lead, praised the volunteers who staffed the event, noting their role in sharing the excitement of the Artemis missions with a global audience.
