NASA has initiated a new class of Earth Venture suborbital missions, utilizing aircraft-mounted sensors to gather critical environmental data. By deploying planes, drones, helicopters, and balloons, researchers aim to bridge the gap between ground-based observations and satellite imagery, providing essential information for weather forecasters, urban planners, and local communities.

The research initiatives cover a diverse array of environmental challenges:

  • Wildfire Storms: The INSPYRE mission, led by the Naval Research Laboratory, will investigate "fire clouds"—intense thunderstorms generated by extreme wildfires. Using NASA’s ER-2 high-altitude aircraft and advanced infrared trackers, the team aims to improve forecasting for these dangerous weather events.
  • Air Quality and Agriculture: The FarmFlux mission will analyze pollutants such as methane and ammonia originating from agricultural regions across the U.S. Meanwhile, the HAMAQ mission will compare air quality dynamics in Atlanta and Mexico City using a combination of low-altitude and high-altitude aircraft.
  • Arctic Transformation: Two projects are focused on the rapidly warming North. The Snow4Flow campaign will utilize specialized aircraft to study glacier retreat across Alaska, Canada, Greenland, and Norway. Simultaneously, the FORTE project will examine how thawing permafrost and changing river systems impact the Arctic Ocean, working in collaboration with local and tribal communities.
  • Landslide Hazards: The LACCE project will monitor slope stability in California and Alaska, investigating how shifting precipitation patterns and retreating glaciers contribute to landslide risks.

These missions involve hundreds of personnel from NASA, the U.S. Navy, and various academic institutions. The Earth Venture Suborbital program was established following a 2007 National Research Council recommendation to support agile, high-impact scientific research.
