NASA is finalizing preparations for the late August launch of the Nancy Grace Roman space telescope from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission, which is currently ahead of schedule and under budget, is named in honor of the agency's first chief of astronomy, Nancy Grace Roman.

Unlike the James Webb Space Telescope, which focuses on high-detail observations of individual targets, the Roman telescope is designed for large-scale sky surveys. Originally derived from a repurposed spy satellite, the observatory features two primary instruments: a wide-field camera and a coronagraph. The wide-field instrument utilizes infrared light to peer through cosmic dust, offering a field of view roughly 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope's infrared camera. This capability allows it to survey the sky significantly faster than its predecessors.

The mission's scientific objectives center on understanding the evolution of the universe, specifically the roles of dark matter and dark energy. While dark matter provides the gravitational structure for galaxies, dark energy is believed to drive the accelerating expansion of the universe. By observing vast spans of cosmic history, researchers hope to determine if dark energy remains constant or changes over time, potentially revealing new physical laws.

Beyond cosmology, the telescope will conduct an extensive survey of exoplanets using gravitational microlensing. This technique allows the observatory to detect planets in wide orbits, low-mass worlds, and even rogue planets not bound to any star. The Roman telescope is expected to operate in tandem with other major observatories, such as the James Webb Space Telescope and the European Space Agency's Euclid mission, to provide a comprehensive map of the cosmos.
