NASA has announced the selection of 18 new projects under its Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program. The agency is providing a total of $3.2 million in Phase I grants, with each project receiving up to $175,000 to conduct a nine-month initial feasibility study. These awards are intended to foster early-stage, breakthrough ideas rather than serve as official NASA missions.

The selected concepts cover a broad spectrum of research, ranging from lunar infrastructure to deep-space observation. Several projects focus on the challenges of sustained lunar exploration, including systems for navigating underground lava tubes, managing thermal control for mobile robots, and integrating radioisotopic heat sources into astronaut suits to survive the long lunar night.

Other initiatives target planetary exploration and beyond. Proposed technologies include hardening instruments for the extreme environment of Venus, utilizing swarms of thousands of tiny satellites to map planetary rings, and developing methods to observe black hole photon rings or detect gravitational waves. Additionally, some researchers are investigating Earth-focused applications, such as using spaceborne dust to mitigate solar radiation.

Greg Stover, director of the Advanced Research and Technology division at NASA Headquarters, emphasized that the agency requires significant technological leaps to achieve its goals of returning to the Moon and advancing toward Mars. Phillip Williams, NIAC’s acting program executive, described the program as an incubator designed to “germinate” early ideas to determine their potential benefit to the nation’s aerospace economy and future missions.

The 18 recipients, known as NIAC Fellows, represent a mix of academic institutions, private companies, and NASA centers. They will spend the coming months evaluating the challenges and opportunities associated with their respective technologies.
