NASA's next major astrophysics observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, is slated to launch on August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The telescope will orbit about 930,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) from Earth, positioned at the second Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2), a gravitational balance point that offers unobstructed views of the cosmos.
The observatory's primary mirror measures 7.9 feet (2.4 meters) across, designed to gather ample light for detailed observations in infrared wavelengths. It will feed two scientific instruments: the Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera capable of peering billions of years back in time, and the Coronagraph Instrument, which blocks starlight to reveal orbiting planets. NASA describes the coronagraph as the most powerful ever flown in space, able to detect planets nearly a billion times fainter than their host stars.
Scientists will focus on three main research areas: dark energy, exoplanets, and dark matter. Dark energy, which constitutes about 68% of the universe's contents, is believed to drive the accelerated expansion of the cosmos, though recent observations suggest its pressure may vary over time. The telescope aims to clarify its nature. For exoplanets—more than 6,000 have been discovered so far—Roman is expected to find additional unusual worlds, including those in habitable zones where conditions might resemble Earth's. Dark matter, the invisible gravitational 'glue' holding cosmic structures together, will be studied by tracing galaxy formation across cosmic history, potentially narrowing down the properties of dark matter particles.
The mission honors Nancy Grace Roman, NASA's first chief astronomer and first female executive, who played a pivotal role in developing the Hubble Space Telescope and earned the nickname 'the mother of Hubble.' Born May 16, 1925, in Nashville, Tennessee, she died December 25, 2018.
Building the telescope involved more than a thousand technicians and engineers, with careers ranging from instrument technicians and mechanical engineers to astrophysicists, as well as roles in photography, management, and social media.
