Technicians at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida have attached a memory card holding 1,350,144 names to the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. This commemorative plaque, which includes submissions from the public as well as Artemis II and Artemis III astronauts, will accompany the observatory on its journey to the Sun-Earth Lagrange point 2 (L2).
Located approximately one million miles from our planet, this destination offers a stable gravitational environment. The telescope is named in honor of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, the agency's inaugural chief astronomer who was instrumental in developing modern space-based observation programs and advocating for open scientific data access.
The mission is currently scheduled to launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A. Liftoff is targeted for no earlier than 7:26 a.m. EDT on Sunday, August 30.
