Members of the Norwegian royal family have maintained a bedside vigil at Oslo University Hospital as the condition of King Harald V remains critical. The 89-year-old monarch, who has occupied the throne since 1991, is currently being treated for haemolytic anaemia, a rare blood disorder that causes fatigue and respiratory distress.
The royal household recently described the King's status as "extremely serious," prompting a somber response from the public. Citizens have gathered outside the palace in Oslo to leave floral tributes, while national television has adjusted its programming to provide continuous coverage of the situation. Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the throne, has assumed the role of regent and has been seen frequently at the hospital alongside other family members, including Queen Sonja, Princess Astrid, and the Crown Prince's children.
The health crisis has prompted significant shifts in national affairs. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre canceled a scheduled diplomatic visit to Germany to remain in the country, stating, "The whole nation is with us as we send warm thoughts to the king and the rest of the royal family."
King Harald has faced a series of health challenges in recent years, including the installation of a pacemaker in 2024 following an illness while abroad. The royal family has navigated a difficult period throughout 2026, which included a lung transplant for Crown Princess Mette-Marit in June and ongoing legal proceedings involving her son, Marius Borg Høiby. The King remains under medical care as the nation monitors his progress.
